WHY WE'RE HERE
Growing up with a parent who has mental health problems can be confusing, overwhelming and isolating, especially when no one talks about it.
They might worry more, miss out on childhood or take on adult responsibilities, often without anyone noticing.
Yet there’s still no dedicated national support for these children, even though around 4 million under-18s in the UK have a parent who struggles with their mental health. That’s more than the combined populations of Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Liverpool, Sheffield and Leeds.
With the right support and understanding, these children can grow up feeling confident, happy and strong — just like any other child.
We work where it counts
For over 20 years, Our Time Charity has been making sure these children aren’t overlooked. We work across a child’s whole support network, offering training for professionals, resources for schools, and safe, welcoming spaces for families. Because when the adults around a child understand what they’re going through, that child’s whole world feels more secure.
“At home, you have to be an adult, look after mum, look after the house, give her medication. At the workshops, you’re having fun, you’re being looked after, and you’re not looking after others.”
Our impact
We don’t offer one-off fixes, we create lasting change. Our work helps children feel less alone, improves communication at home, and gives adults tools they can use for years to come.
At our workshops in 2024...
families attended KidsTime Workshops
children and young people were supported
of children said they felt more able to discuss their mental health with parents
of parents and carers said they found it easier to listen and communicate with their children
of parents and carers said their relationship with their child had improved
Our vision
Every child in the UK who has a parent with mental health problems will find the support they need wherever they live, as early as possible.
OUR Mission
To break the cycle of intergenerational mental ill health by supporting and empowering children to live confident, connected, and emotionally healthy lives.
Our values
Collaborative
We bring people together across health, social care, education, and mental health services to share experience and knowledge.
Honest
We talk openly about mental health problems from the start, with sensitivity and respect for safeguarding.
Respectful
We recognise people’s experience and knowledge, working with families as equal partners and supporting shared learning.
Non-judgemental
We reduce shame and build confidence by creating safe, supportive spaces for parents and children.
Community building
We bring families together to reduce isolation, challenge stigma and grow a sense of belonging.
Our story
From a single workshop in Camden to a national voice for change — Our Time Charity’s journey began in the early 2000s with a simple idea: children who have a parent with mental health problems shouldn’t be left to cope alone.
