Supporting Children During Stress Awareness Month

A time to recognise the courage of children and young people, and offer the support they need to thrive.

“One conversation with an empathic adult who understood mental health could have been life changing."

April is Stress Awareness Month, a vital opportunity to acknowledge a group often overlooked: children growing up with a parent who has a mental illness. While every child experiences stress at some point, those living with the unpredictability of a parent's mental health challenges may face heightened emotional strain.

Children in these circumstances can experience acute stress triggered by events like hospitalisation or crisis episodes, as well as chronic stress caused by long-term instability at home. Without the right support, this stress can become toxic, impacting a child’s emotional development and long-term well-being.

But there is hope. Creating open, safe spaces — like family hubs, schools, or youth centres — where children can talk about their experiences, can help break the cycle of shame and silence. Our multi-family work is designed to nurture these conversations, reduce guilt, and build resilience.

The most powerful protective factor for a child under stress? A supportive adult. Whether it's a teacher, a coach, a neighbour, or a relative — you could be that lifeline. As one young person put it, “One conversation with an empathic adult who understood mental health could have been life changing.”

Children of parents with mental illness often grow into empathetic, resilient, and insightful adults. With encouragement, understanding, and space to express themselves, these young people can turn their experiences into strengths.

This month, let's recognise their courage, validate their emotions, and offer the support they need to thrive. Will you be the one to listen when a child is ready to speak?

You could be an ally for a child or young person by learning more about the issues or taking a short course. Explore our resources, or find out more about training.
