About the Mindful Primary Schools Project
In 2023, we collaborated with partners in Germany, Spain, Austria, and Iceland to support children’s mental health and wellbeing and build their resilience in school contexts.
The project, led by Agaplesion Diakonieklinikum Rotenburg, in collaboration with the University of Oldenburg, was generously funded by Erasmus+, the EU’s flagship programme for education, training, youth, and sport.
Our team was consulted to identify the most effective ways to support young carers with parents facing mental health challenges and together, we developed a range of valuable resources tailored to assist our partners in addressing these needs within their respective countries.
The goal of the project was to:
- Raise awareness and train school staff in mental health and mental illness, with a specific focus on young carers
- Equip school staff with the skills and confidence to address the topic of mental illness with pupils
- Develop a mindful, anti-bullying, and supportive school culture that promotes positive peer-to-peer relationships
- Link up the schools programme with local systems of support
We delivered training to school staff in all countries, piloted curriculum materials with pupils in Years 3-4, and helped to implement a programme of culture change in each partner school to promote a safe and supportive environment for all pupils, with built-in support for young carers.
