Our new short course, Supporting children of parents with a mental illness: a systemic approach developed in partnership with the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust is now open.
Whilst open to anyone with an interest in the subject, it is aimed in particular at healthcare and education professionals in contact with children, young people, and families affected by these issues, including psychologists, GPs, nurses, social workers, teachers, and youth workers.
Book and start today. If you have previously registered your interest, you will receive an alert that the course is open.
The course offers an accessible introduction to parental mental illness and a systemic exploration of its effect on children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development.
Over 6-hours of online learning and priced at £99, this course will help professionals to meet their Continuous Professional Development (CPD) requirements, stay current, and understand how they can play a role in supporting the children of parents who have a mental illness.
On successful completion, participants will be able to:
- Examine the short and long-term impacts of having a parent with a mental illness, including attachment patterns, cognitive and emotional development
- Understand the key principles of Multi-Family Therapy (MFT) and systemic practice on which Our Time was founded, using case studies from the i-THRIVE programme and Our Time's KidsTime model
- Recognise and appreciate the environmental, societal and cultural barriers to accessing support faced by children and identify strategies to overcome them
- Consider how the principles of an integrated, whole-family approach can be applied to promote engagement, facilitate shared decision making and empower children, young people and their families to be actively involved in decisions about their care
- Critically reflect upon your professional practice and implement strategies to foster resilience and enable children and young people to thrive
“The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and Our Time have partnered because we recognise that there is an urgent need to support children affected by parental mental illness. Our hope is that this new training will increase awareness of the issue and equip professionals with the confidence and skills to help children thrive."
